First time commissioning a custom piece of furniture?
Here is some insight into our process…
Connect
If you’re interested in a custom commission, just email or call to share the type of piece you are looking for, budget, and timeline. Your thoughts on aesthetics are key, so pictures of both reference materials and the eventual home for the piece will provide a ton of context. As we chat, we’ll walk through the way it should function and how you’ll interact.
Design
With a baseline in place, we’ll kick off the design process. If possible, we will visit your home to get a feel for the space and to learn more about how the piece will function. We’ll develop freehand renderings, working out the aesthetics and functionality.
When we feel that the fundamentals have been accounted for, we’ll send you the drawings along with any other pertinent information or additional questions. This should be a dialogue and your thoughts are critical, so please feel free to share. Keep in mind that we enjoy working to limitations - whether it’s budget, timeline, or material.
As we close out the design process, we will establish a project total, deposit, material, finish, and a delivery / install plan. The first 10 hours of design time are on us. If additional time is requested, it will come at an hourly fee. This doesn’t happen often and we will certainly discuss it with you before moving forward.
Engineering and Construction
Once the direction of the piece is set, we will develop a full-scale orthographic drawing. These are drawn by hand in our shop and allow for a more fluid design process. We solve for 90% of the design at this point, leaving a little space for the material to talk to us.
G&K has an open door policy with clients interested in the building process so you are welcome to stop by the shop to learn more. We are also happy to share photos of the progression along the way to keep you up to date on the status of your commission.
Delivery
Once your commission is completed, we’ll send along photos and finalize a delivery date. We deliver and install all of our work ourselves when possible, and if you live outside of New England we will discuss shipping options and provide installation instructions.
